Where to Eat Tidbits: Rai Rai Ken Cubao

Rai Rai Ken Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

If you haven’t heard of Rai Rai Ken yet, I don’t think we’re living in the same planet! Kidding aside, Rai Rai Ken is the forefather of Ramen restaurants here in the country. I have been dining at Rai Rai Ken ever since I was 9! Through the years, the chain has maintained its authentic taste without being distant from the average purchasing foodies! Their equation to  success? Quality Ramen + affordable price = a reign of more than 20 years!

My thoughts:

🍜🥢🍚 Rai Rai Ken’s Ramen is one of the best in town! Their Miso Ramen is so on-point that the richness of the taste is undoubtedly satisfying. Like all their Tonkotsu-based soup, the pork bones broth base amplifies the flavor of the dish…and OMG the size of the serving! You can actually share this with a friend! Not bad for a Ramen ranging from 250 to 400 Php!

20160918_195347-copy

🍜🥢🍚 If you are fond of challenges, you ought to try their Garlic Chili Ramen. This is best eaten during cold weather. It has ox tripe and shrimp which are the ideal grubs to pair with hot Ramen!

20160918_194930-copy

🍜🥢🍚 Rai Rai Ken is not only all about Ramen. They also serve Bentos (Japanese lunch box consisting of rice, vegetables, and meat) and Donburis (Japanese rice bowl dish with fish, meat, and vegetables). They are all promising and sumptuous!

20160918_195453

🍜🥢🍚 What is a Japanese Restaurant without sushi and maki? They have it here! Just don’t expect the exotic ones, of course. But if you’re looking for the timeless classics like salmon, kani, and tuna, you will not be disappointed!

Rai Rai Ken can still be found in several locations in Metro Manila. I am very to lucky to be living so near it in Cubao! Try their Ramen today and find out why they are standing strong in the market for more than 2 decades!

Where to Eat Tidbits: Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

If you are tired of the usual chicken joints, you have got to try Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar! What sets this place apart is that they do not only showcase their signature chicken (which is, by the way, the richest, mouthwatering chicken I have tasted in a long time! You can tell how wide the variation of herbs they’re using as rubs and how they slowly grill their food to goodness!), they also have a number of dips or sauces that will cater everybody’s taste buds.

20180813_195822_090-copy

My thoughts:

🐔🍗🌶️ The dips/sauces are refillable! You have 8 options to choose from, ranging from the oriental Sweet Soy to the daring and fiery Chili Peppa’, which is my favorite!!!

20180813_195645_006-copy

🐔🍗🌶️ At first glance, food may seem pricey but boy are the servings abundant! I had trouble finishing my Chicken and Rib Plate!

🐔🍗🌶️ The interior of the restaurant is Instagram-worthy! I love how they recycled bottles to wall decors. The lighting and fixtures were also beautiful, giving that whole Tex-Mex vibe.

🐔🍗🌶️ They have friendly and accommodating staff. You know how rowdy family dinners turn out! They were patient and enduring to our never ending (and at one point unreasonable) order changes and requests.

20180813_195917_886-copy

🐔🍗🌶️ If it’s your birthday, all you need to do is present a valid I.D. with your birthday stated on it and they will give you–get this–one whole chicken!!! OH MY LORD!!! I couldn’t hide the fact that I was ecstatic over this surprise. It wasn’t my birthday, though. It was my brother’s! When the box was handed to him I just knew that tomorrow’s breakfast will be phenomenal!

🐔🍗🌶️ You have got to check out their desserts! Their El Fuego is a must try! It’s chocolate fudge topped with vanilla ice cream, which were all wrapped inside a cloud of torched marshmallow!

20180813_203618_230-copy

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar is best for lunch outs and dinners with your family and friends. They have a bar as well where you can give their Beergarita a go and celebrate life and what-not with your amigos!

Big Bad Wolf Book Sale: HEAD THERE NOW!

At this day and age, being a bibliophile is glorious! Who ever said that technology killed our one and only love? A true lover of books would see technology as a blessing: aside from the physical publication, you have the PDF files at your easy disposal!

20180223_010902

This is my personal sentiment! I love reading ebooks but I still am in love with the smell of pages! This is why when I found out about the Big Bad Wolf Book Fair, I knew I couldn’t miss it for the world!

This is Big Bad Wolf’s first ever book sale in the country. Originally from Malaysia, the purpose of the company has always been to bring the joy of reading to those who can’t afford it…and my god, did they served their mission! All the books available are at 60% to 80% discount!

20180223_011058 copy.jpg

It was heavenly, right at the very first step inside the World Trade Center main hall. Since the event is open 24 hours from the day they launched last February 16, you can come in any time you desire. We arrived there at 1 in the morning hoping there would be less people but sleep is for the weak for people like us! It was swarming with happy nerds from all walks of life, all age and sizes! I couldn’t help but squeal!

The collection is indubitably VAST! Big Bad Wolf also catered to all genres: from Y.A.s (young adult) to cookbooks, they have it! I had a hard time choosing and meeting my budget espcially when my poindexter (I’m female but hey) heart realized that they also sell graphic novels!!!

20180223_012859 copy.jpg

Now this was when everything got serious for me! I saw special edition DC Comics for half the price! I usually gawk at the shelves of Fully Booked hoping that one day all the kind deeds I’ve done in my life would be rewarded by the DC fairy god mother with free, limited edition comics!

20180223_011649 copy.jpg

After I secured the titles I needed to purchase, we went around every corner of the place. We saw interesting book designs, premium editions, boxed sets, and even adult coloring books! If you are into religious and inspirational books, business, and even pets, you will not be disappointed!

20180223_015242 copy

20180223_023619

Paying for it was a breeze too! There were more than 20 check out counters operating to cater excited shoppers! Everything was in order that it was beautiful!

Here are some tips for you to maximize the discounts being offered by Big Bad Wolf: (1) Go for the hardbounds! Paperback novels sell for the minimum prize of 180 php to 190 php which is not that big of a dicount. However, should you go for the big guns, you get to enjoy a hefty price cut! From the original price of 1,500 php to 2500 php, I bought the graphic novels for no more than 900 each! I am not even kidding!

IMG_20180223_050934_631 copy.jpg

(2) Another tip, you really have to check every stall. Stop being a royalty, asking for assistance–NO! I’ve seen celebrities getting down and dirty just to find that title they adore!

(3) Last but not the least, bring your eco bags and save the planet!

Tomorrow, February 25, 2018 at 11:59 P.M., Big Bad Wolf Book Sale will close their doors to the public and end the, hopefully, annual celebration. You still have more than 24-hours left so if I were you, HEAD THERE NOW!

*Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is being held at World Trade Center, Gil Puyat Avenue Extension corner Diosdado Macapagal Blvd., Pasay City, Metro Manila. The direction is below:

Mamih Cafe: Brunei’s Chill-Out Spot

Night life in Brunei is all about relaxation, lounging, and eating good food. Drinking in bars, loud music, and the like is almost non-existent here. I would have to say that the beauty of Brunei  revolves around its culture and heritage sites, nothing much on the party scene. This is why we fell in love!

20170624_172200 copy

Brunei is such a relaxed place!

We, my partner and I, are owls. We love the night time. We love having coffee late at night and finish in the wee hours of the morning. When we arrived in Brunei, it was a shift from our practice. A pleasant shift. 7 in the evening the first night we were there, we headed to a local restaurant called Mamih Cafe or Kafe Mamih. It is located in Warisan Mata-Mata Complex in Jln. Mata Mata, just right next to where we stayed!

20170624_172738 copy

The place is comfortable. It uses dim lights to emphasize the comfort that you deserve to get while dining. The spacing between chairs and tables are perfect. You get to move around and it does not have a crowded feel. The color scheme flirts too well with the lights, with its dash of yellow and blue, and sometimes pink and brown. Each table also has a yellow light over it which all the more draws you to your food.

20170624_210940 copy

The first thing we noticed when we were handed the menu is that the restaurant serves a lot of Filipino food! They have Kare-Kare and Halo-Halo! They also have Filipino staff who are fluent in speaking Malay but can easily shift to speaking Tagalog and English!

20170624_211019 copy

We ordered Bah Kuh Teh and Nasi Ayam for our dinner. According to our host, these are house specialties, and of course, we couldn’t miss it! Bah Kuh Teh is like our very own Gotong Batangas. It is boiled pork rib soup seasoned in exquisite spices such as star anise, garlic, and cinnamon, to name some. They include different ingredients on the soup such as pork innards, enoki mushroom, etc. and it absolutely works! The first time I tasted it here at Mamih Cafe, I knew it’s going to be an addiction.

20170624_211305 copy

Bah Kuh Teh is love, I swear!

Nasi Ayam is most commonly known as Hainanese Chicken Rice. This dish is served with 3 different sauces, ranging from the savory, to the sweet, and chili. Although this dish is nothing new to our taste, Mamih Cafe’s Nasi Ayam has this certain tinge of authenticity which really adds to the food’s appeal.

20170624_211546 copy

Their Nasi Ayam comes with authentic sauces. Oh my heart!

We ordered drinks as well. We would not miss trying Kopi C Iced and Kopi O Iced. As huge coffee fans, we knew that this local coffee is worth tasting. Kopi C is coffee with evaporated milk, while Kopi O is black coffee. These versions of coffee is similarly available in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

20170624_211226 copy

Teh Tarik, Kopi C, and Kopi O!

We wanted to order sate or grilled chicken but there were a lot of sate on queue to be cooked and we just couldn’t wait any longer. We understand, though. Since a lot of people are having dinner right after fasting, definitely the demand would be high. Plus, grilled food is no good when served cold. They serve it by batch, sadly.

After having our dinner, we were assisted by our homestay host to the counter. According to her, that is how people pay for food in Brunei. People do not hail for servers to give them the check. They walk to the counter and let the cashier know what they have ordered. Pretty honest, if you would ask me. So we paid for the dinner and it was a pleasant surprise knowing that our bill did not go over Php 500!

20170624_210940 copy

Our experience in Mamih Cafe is our initiation to Brunei food. It is the start of my love affair with Bah Kuh Teh! Overall, the restaurant serves delicious dishes. It has a calm atmosphere which goes hand-in-hand with the peaceful evenings of Brunei. After a very long day travelling, being in Mamih Cafe is a luxury.

We Want Workshops: First Aid for Furkids

Being a Fur parent is sometimes as hard as being a real mother or father to a child. The financial obligation is there, not to mention the effort and emotion you invest on them. Another thing that you need to ask yourself if you are planning to have a pet is, “What to do in times of emergency?” It’s a good thing that We Want Workshops came up with a seminar entitled “First Aid for Furkids” last May 20, 2017 at Ortigas Library.

18519597_286808771730600_1694126646355306670_n_marked

We Want Workshops or WWW invited Dr. Marc Joseph Domingo, DVM to host the said event. He started discussing essentials such as putting together a first aid kit for your pets. The furparents who attended were very eager and listened intently right from the start.

18620026_286807975064013_8767389638287551612_n_marked

The interesting part was when Dr. Macky classified the table food pets needed to avoid. Questions were thrown here and there such as the safety of “sawdust” or meat shavings or if the dog ingested something unintentionally, what would be the best thing to do. As a fur parent, myself, I understood every inquiry that was thrown and I appreciated the patience of the veterinarian in front of us, answering each questions intricately.

18527661_286808221730655_2019500397361767963_n_marked

Rodeo Club Philippines also attended and shared with the attendees the goals of their organization. Not only are they enthusiasts of the sport, they are also a group of veterinarians bound to help and save animals in need. We Want Workshops invited the organization as a sponsor to discuss their cause and also spread awareness that a Veterinarian’s job is not only glitz and glamour but requires a certain dedication.

18620152_286808075064003_5445339516675291300_n_marked18582065_286808091730668_561441633472928473_n_marked

Right before the event ended, winners for the Best Pet was awarded. Weeks before the event, We Want Workshops held a photo liking contest wherein pet owners can show off their beloved furkids. Xyrus Ivan Mabini Castillote and R Patrick Reyes won and got a free invite to the event plus a blown-up and framed photo of Chichi and Esper.

18664431_286808171730660_4264614327373143102_n_marked

Dr. Noel Manalo also sent a message via SMS expressing his regret of not being able to come. He is also known as the “Vet ng Bayan” as featured by I-Witness, a show on GMA News TV. He was also a sponsor but sadly could not make it because of his prior commitment of going around the Bicol region offering free veterinary care to those living below the poverty line but still is compassionate to their four-legged friends.

18556997_286808048397339_8845176215542697372_n_marked

Lunch also was served right after the event and what could be better than seeing people with common interests share a thing or two with each other!

It was a fun and knowledge-filled Saturday morning from We Want Workshops and as everyone bid their goodbyes to one another, each knew that they are a better pet-parent than they were yesterday!

Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo: Onboard Elegance

You have got to face it: no matter how traumatizing the movie Titanic was (imagine having the time of your life and then realizing that that was your last hoorah), you have dreamt of boarding a luxury ocean liner at least once in your lifetime. The sumptuous food, the glorious halls, the fancy cabins…you get to experience all that and it’s just half of the deal! You also get to travel to different parts of the world! Imagine how awe-stricken I was at the foot of Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo. My dream was coming true (well…sort of)!

20170518_130821_marked

Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo made Philippines its home port. In its entire majestic form, the 13-story cruise liner with its wide array of restaurants, offering to take your palette around the globe; it’s wellness centers such as their spa, gym, salon; and even the electrifying sight of its 100-meter waterslide stretching out to one side of the ship, is simply a gateway to the places this pleasing giant can take you. I can only imagine how much time it would take to see all its corners! When we started with the elevator, it literally took me to a movie scene where the lift is giving you a full view of how fascinating the place is.

20170518_135021_marked

The Mediterranean Restaurant is the main site for buffet. The area is spacious and is ideal for enjoying such gastronomic offers. What I like about the hall is the wide windows where you get to enjoy the view of the ocean while dining.

An Asian food trip is not complete without Peking duck and as we chanced by the Blue Lagoon, we saw the display that got us all excited! Another beauty of the Blue Lagoon is that you get to place your order on the tablet situated on your table—no more old-school hand-waving that we are so used on doing.

20170518_140501_marked20170518_140440_marked

The other restaurants in Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo are the Noble House (Chinese), The Taj (Indian) which boasted its no pork and lard-free menu, The Samurai Restaurant (Japanese and hello huge bottles of SAKE!), among others. All are equally pleasing to the palette! If you want dessert, they also have an in-house gelateria named Café Gelato right next to the pool. Strategic, right?

20170518_133608_marked

And talking about the pool, all I can say is that it’s really a sight to behold! They named it the Parthenon Pool as it lived to its name of everything Greek.  From the mosaic tiles, the colonnade of columns with capitals, and even the Greek sculptures were everywhere! I personally love the violent rumbling of the Jacuzzi. It was relaxing and maintained its beauty amidst the harsh sunlight. The slide was also thrilling! Imagine rushing through the twist and turns while seeing part of the ocean rushing beneath you!

20170518_133452_marked20170518_133423_marked20170518_133505_marked

There’s also a bar where you can enjoy live music and drinks. I personally appreciated the comfortable seats at the bar and those little tea set displays. It’s Star Cruises’ Superstar Virgo’s way of showcasing the different cultures they welcome. The place and even the drinks is a fusion of both the Eastern and Western world.

20170518_134240_marked

20170518_134158_marked20170518_134145_marked

If you are also into shopping, you can purchase different goodies from all over the world. From snacks, chocolates, perfumes, and even plushies, they have it! They also sell memorabilia that will always take you back to the Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo experience.

The Cabins are also beautiful! From the suit to the Inside Cabins, Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo ensures that they cater all walks of life with the same kind of care and glamour and privacy.

Aside from food, the luxury liner also upholds entertainment to the highest regard. Inside the ship is the Lido Theatre where shows such as the 1001 Nights are featured. The show is a marriage between a musical and acrobat show and is as exhilarating as either of the two!

20170518_135302_marked20170518_135349_marked

The bridge of the ship or the place where the ship is commanded is also open to the public. You can see the captain and the crew doing their work. You can also see a variation of trophies given to Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo for every port they visit.

20170518_134615_marked

Of course, the cruise will not be a success no matter how beautiful the facilities are without the hard work of the crew. Comprised of manpower from different parts of the world, they are the men and women behind the success of the cruise. There were a lot of Filipinos working at Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo and it’s so easy to assume that they could not be luckier enough to be part of this delightful journey!

20170518_135920_marked

The grace of Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo is one that is undeniably hard to forget. Not all Filipinos were given the chance before to experience what goes on in a cruise liner. Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo is opening the doors to us with affordable rates that will leave you with memories to last you a lifetime.

Araneta Center Cubao Banchetto: Christmas is Here

Finally, it’s that time of the year! The festive air is everywhere: from the television ads to every shop’s display…it’s the season to be jolly!

Araneta Center Cubao is not one to be outdone. With the launch and lighting of the Giant Christmas Tree last November 4, 2016, the Holidays has indeed graced one of Quezon City’s major shopping districts.

20161203_205701

Now, the celebration would not be complete without food, am I correct? What better way to infuse this to the tradition other than setting a Banchetto right at the foot of the Giant Christmas Tree? Last weekend, I have submitted to sweet ambrosia and this you can do too! Here’s a quick guide to help you decide where to go and what to eat at the Banchetto:

20161203_210227

1. Amang’s Grill

20161203_212417

There is a very good reason why I placed this stall on number 1: their food is to die for and, not to mention, super affordable. They serve grilled chicken, grilled pork, seafood, even cold cuts, all ranging from 50.00 Php to 100.00 Php and that is already with rice. Their staff is very commendable as they are very attentive and friendly, plus a very strong recall. They remembered my love for squid and chicharong bulaklak! Since Banchetto is very crowded, they’ll even go the extra mile to find you a seat so you can eat in peace.

20161203_212442

2. Boiling Spices

20161203_212315

This is a home away from home. Boiling Spices serves delectable lutong bahay! Now this is not just your typical ulams but they ensure to add a touch of the Bicolano taste in every dish. Their Kinalas and Laing are my absolute favorite. You can savor every spices in a meal which will make you exclaim: “Truly uragon!”

20161203_212228

3. Bagnet Rice Patong

20161203_205936

If we have a stall from the South, the North also has their own entry. Bagnet Rice Patong promises to captivate your senses with their longganisa and bagnet meals that are cooked as you order. This is to retain the oh-so-mouth-watering crispiness and to further delight you with the sizzling goodness.

20161203_205956

4. King Michael Shawarma

20161203_210054

Up for the strong yet alluring Mediterranean taste? If so, drop by King Michael Shawarma’s stall. You are not just going to be hooked by the big, hefty slab of meat displayed on their stall, you’ll also be amazed by the fancy moves of the staff while they chop and slice as they prepare your meal.

20161203_210121

5. Timplador de Cebu

20161203_210203

Have you every tried eating boneless lechon? If not, you are missing half of your dear life. The tasty goodness cooked meticulously and rolled neatly is something you might want to have in your Noche Buena and Media Noche table. You can have a try and order their rice meal at 120 Php. Better yet, pre-order this Christmas and New Year pleasure!

1

6. Villa’s House of Crispy

20161203_210405

The stall is every binge-eater’s paradise. As the name implies, Villa’s House of Crispy is everything deep fried! Their chicken skin is definitely a win. What’s amazing is that they have this magic on preserving the crunchiness of their food despite being exposed to air for a prolonged period of time. Yummy!

20161203_210429

7. All About Fried

20161203_211300

From kwek-kwek to squidballs, down to chicken skin and lumpia, All About Fried is all complete! Forget running after the kuya who roams your street every afternoon! Visit the stall and satisfy your streetfood cravings!

20161203_211238

8. Smoke and Roast

20161203_211437

20161203_211335

Their food stall is located perpendicular to the giant San Miguel Pale Pilsen. If Amang’s Grill is affordable and heavenly, Smoke and Roast comes really and dangerously close second. If you love isaw, liempo, and lechon belly, then prepare to be thrilled by Smoke and Roast’s food. Their gizzard and liver are two dish worth mentioning! Mouthwatering!

20161203_211424

9. Pizza and Pasta

20161203_211706

Think Sbarro. Think Yellow Cab. Think chunky slabs of this heavenly Italian offering! This stall serves humongous pizza slices and their variety of flavors is anything but limited! They have an extensive menu and with just a bite you’ll notice that their pizza is not just. It has pasta filling! OMG!

20161203_211648

10. Bibingka

20161203_211830

What is Christmas without Bibingka? It’s so hard to imagine this time of the year without this tradition. Now this stall has improved and tweaked the official Christmas kakanin to fit every millenial’s taste. They have buko bibingka, leche flan bibingka, and the ever coveted Nutella Bibingka.

20161203_211903

11. Red Wings

20161203_211949

I usually veer away from buffalo wings as the size of serving does not always give justice to the price. However, the buffalo wings of Red Wings is different. It is absolutely generous! You can even smell the rub from afar! One thing that stopped me in my tracks, though, is their unusually large patty. Fat, juicy, and, I kid you not, distracting to the senses. I will bet you a 100 pesos if this does not satisfy your palate!

20161203_212007

20161203_211934

12. Piper’s Pan

20161203_213119

For those done with their savory endeavors, you may be like me, craving for sweets. Piper’s Pan is the solution to this yearning. They promise to thrill your taste buds with their scrumptious and rich cakes all at 3 for 100 Php.

20161203_213055

13. Del Barro’s Grill

20161203_213555

Now this stall serves your usual Banchetto food. I try to stay away from them since they are really hostile for a food business entity. I was taking pictures of their food while deciding on what to order when the woman on my not-so-good photo demanded to know why I was taking pictures and what it’s for. When I told her that it is for a blog she asked me to leave as she has a lot of customers who will “buy”. Ok then. Very rude and disgusting customer service.

14. Bumble Tea Place

20161203_222230

It is a Banchetto fact that sodas and bottled water are the only drinks available. Thank goodness to Bumble Tea Place, there is option for variation. They have milk tea and fruit tea. A unique way to go is to try their Pulpy Aloe Juice. I didn’t, though. I guess I was too caught up with their Strawberry Chill Tea! Ever tasted red tea? This is waaaay better.

15. Coco Vida

Another natural way to go is to have fruit shakes. This may be the reason why their stall is being swarmed by people all the time. A definite must-try is their Mango Graham Juice.

16. Tuna Town

20161203_211529

It is so very easy to acquire a significant rise of blood pressure whenever you visit a food park. Thank goodness for stalls like Tuna Town, which opted to serve an alternative option of fish! Their bangus is big and generous and if you are not really a fan of seafood, they can always serve you the usual inihaw na liempo.

The Araneta Center Banchetto is one divine stop for your full-flavored adventures. For Cubao dwellers, such as I, isn’t this an inexpensive yet rewarding way to celebrate the season? Have an eternal affair with good food and start your journey here. Find out what I am raving about! Don’t forget to tell us your experience on the comments section.
